The Glittering Cave: A film screening series at The Ruby

I’m a member of The Ruby, an arts and letters-focused women’s space in San Francisco. I run a film screening series called The Glittering Cave, where we celebrate, watch, and discuss films with women-identifying or non-binary creative leads. This has mean women directors up until now, but I’m hoping to feature women cinematographers, composers, or productions designers soon.

The film that launched the series in July 2019 was Agnès Varda’s Cléo from 5 to 7. I made a zine with contributions from fellow Ruby members Maria Judice, Natalie So, and Dorothy Santos. The only rule was that each piece had to be about 100 words on Agnès Varda. I think it came out pretty well!\

Since then we’ve watched Cheryl Haines’ The Watermelon Woman (1996), Anna Biller’s The Love Witch (2016), and Sandi Tan’s Shirkers (2019). Coming up next on 2/24/20 is Sophie Fiennes’ 2018 film Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami.
